Voltaren Mode of Action (MOA)
Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel in action
See how Voltaren combats arthritis pain in the mode of action (MOA) video above.
How does our emulgel formulation work?
Voltaren is specially designed with an emulgel formulation which combines a cooling aqueous-alcoholic base with a lipid phase that exerts a soothing and cooling effect when applied. When the lipid-diclofenac mixture comes into contact with skin, the diclofenac is released into the skin. The skin then acts as a reservoir as the diclofenac continues to be released, producing a lasting analgesic effect.
Voltaren targets pain at the source to provide effective arthritis pain relief
Diclofenac inhibits COX receptors
The mechanism of action of diclofenac is similar to other NSAIDs. Diclofenac inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2), an early component of the arachidonic acid cascade, resulting in the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.1
Specially designed to penetrate2
Voltaren is specially designed to penetrate deep through the skin and accumulates in the synovial tissue while producing a sustained analgesic effect. When applied as directed, Voltaren is retained in the following:
- Subcutaneous tissue (the layer that underlies the skin) at a mean concentration of up to 91 ng/ml
- Muscle at a mean concentration of up to 63 ng/g
- Synovial tissue at a mean concentration of up to 20 ng/ml
- Synovial fluid at a mean concentration of up to 26 ng/ml
