FDA Alert: “Don’t Overuse Acetaminophen”

FDA consumer alert

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a consumer update regarding the overuse of acetaminophen.1

  • Most patients do not realize that more than 600 medications, both prescription and OTC, contain acetaminophen to help relieve pain and reduce fever
  • Patients should be aware that taking too much acetaminophen (more than 4,000 mg per day) can lead to overdose and severe liver damage
  • The FDA offers tips on how to avoid overdosing on acetaminophen. One example is for patients to pay attention to all the ingredients listed on a medication

As you know, there are many medications readily available to patients that contain acetaminophen, including some Haleon brands. When counseling patients, it’s critical to ask about all the medications they are taking to ensure patient safety.

Visit the FDA website to read the full consumer alert.
