Chlorhexidine digluconate: widely regarded as the gold standard

Chlorhexidine is a complex molecule that adheres to oral surfaces, as well as adhering to and breaking down the cell walls of bacteria, killing them. Chlorhexidine molecules can remain on oral surfaces for up to 12 hours, preventing plaque from forming.2

It is this substantivity that can also cause dietary chromogens to adhere to chlorhexidine, resulting in staining. However, these stains are removeable through brushing.3

Clinical studies and more than 40 years of chlorhexidine use have shown:4

  • NO adverse alterations in the bacteria in dental plaque
  • NO emergent microbial resistance
  • NO increase in resistant microflora
