Paracetamol has both analgesic and antipyretic effects1

Paracetamol exerts its analgesic and antipyretic effects by the suppression of prostaglandins. However, unlike non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), it does not have any anti-inflammatory properties.1,2

  • Chart showing efficacy of paracetamol in fever reduction

Relieves fever in 30 minutes for up to 6 hours1

392 adults with an acute, uncomplicated fever due to a suspected viral upper respiratory tract infection, were given paracetamol (500 mg or 1000 mg), aspirin (500 mg or 1000 mg), or a placebo, in a randomised controlled study. Paracetamol 500 mg showed a rapid reduction in fever, as early as 30 minutes, compared to the placebo group, and lasted for at least 6 hours.3

    Study summary

  • Molecule

Adults (n=158) with an acute, uncomplicated, febrile upper respiratory tract infection of suspected viral origin, were treated with paracetamol tablets in a multi-centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel group trial (aspirin).3

A significant decrease (p<0.001) was seen in the score for headache, feverish discomfort, and myalgia/achiness in the 1000 mg group at 2, 4, and 6 hours post-dosing, compared to the placebo group.3

    Study summary

  • Tablets

Adverse effects from paracetamol are infrequently reported, however, adverse events occurring very rarely include thrombocytopaenia, anaphylaxis, cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions, bronchospasm in patients sensitive to aspirin and other NSAIDs, and hepatic dysfunction.1
