Dentine Hypersensitivity: Understand, Diagnose, Treat
As part of the FDI Dental Congress 2023 programme Haleon sponsored a symposium dedicated to dentine hypersensitivity for dental professionals. The content draws from recent epidemiological studies in both Europe and China to understand prevalence, risk factors and impacts of the condition. By focusing on the person perspective we can see how effective identification and management of the condition can have impacts beyond just pain relief.
Speakers
- Professor Nicola West: Professor of Periodontology and Head of the Clinical Trials Unit at the School of Oral and Dental Sciences, University of Bristol, UK.
- Professor Wensheng Rong: Professor of Preventative Dentistry Department of Dental School, Peking University.
- Dr Charlie Parkinson: Global Oral Health Medical Affairs Director, Haleon.
Learning objectives
- Understand the prevalence of dentine hypersensitivity and erosive tooth wear in Europe and China.
- Understand how behaviour change can drive more proactive diagnosis of dentine hypersensitivity.
- Understand the impact of dentine hypersensitivity on quality of life and how NovaMin can manage dentine hypersensitivity and improve oral health related quality of life of patients.

Dentine hypersensitivity and associated risk factors
This presentation by Professor Nicola West examines the findings in terms of risk factors and prevalence for dentine hypersensitivity from a European epidemiological study in 7 countries amongst adults aged 18 and over. The condition was shown to be highly prevalent across all countries and ages with peak age of 38-47 years old.
Prevalence of dentine hypersensitivity and associated factors in China
Professor Wensheng Rong presents results from the 2023 study which sought to determine the prevalence of dentine hypersensitivity and its associated factors in 11,622 adults aged 18-69 in seven cities in China. The study also examined the quality-of-life impact of the condition for patients and found an association between tooth wear and DH.
Dentine Hypersensitivity: Person’s Perspective
In this presentation session Dr Charlie Parkinson outlines the development in research methods for dentine hypersensitivity from the historic focus on pain scores to the more recent examination of the person’s perspective of the condition and everyday impacts. He presents outputs from studies including those using the dentine hypersensitivity experience questionnaire (DHEQ) measure and outlines a prospective real world evidence clinical study.
Sensodyne Repair & Protect Deep Repair: The science behind the deep and targeted repair within dentine tubules
Learn more about the mode of action of NovaMin, the ingredient in Sensodyne Repair & Protect Deep Repair, including the visualisation of the hydroxyapatite-like layer formed over and within the tubules of sensitive teeth. Dr Charlie Parkinson also shares the results of the 12 long-term studies conducted by Haleon including a six-month study using quality of life measures.
